4 Ways To Keep Your Kids Fit and Entertained This Upcoming School Yearby

The school year isn’t the time for family vacations, sunny days, long balmy nights and time off school for kids, like summer is. However, summer can also be a time where parents have too much to do and kids don’t have enough to do. Often summertime leaves parents furiously researching kids summer activities and summer camps, while children often feel more inclined to flop in front of the TV or stare at the computer screen all day. Summer is an opportunity for children to become more active and increase fitness, and yet for many kids, summer is spent sitting indoors, gradually losing fitness and sports skills they may have developed at school. Studies also show that sedentary kids could experience unhealthy summer weight gain.

While the school year provides organized sports, after school activities, and active play, maintaining this level of activity and fitness during summer can be a challenge. But if children perform no activity for the 10-11 weeks of the summer break, they could experience a significant decline in fitness and physical development. Here we look at how children can maintain their fitness and physical development during the school months while enjoying their summer vacation as well.

  1. 1.       Encourage Them To Do Something They Love

For both children and adults alike, finding a fitness activity that you can actually enjoy is the key to sticking with it. For kids, an enjoyable activity could be anything from fitness classes to afterschool camps, or as a special treat private coaching in their favorite sport to help them learn a new skill or perfect an old one.

Kids fitness classes are a great way to engage and motivate children to stay fit and active no matter what time of year it is. From yoga to boxing, dance or aerobics, kids fitness classes give children the chance to express themselves through movement while developing essential motor control and muscle tone that’s vital for health. In the same vein, private coaching can help shy children come out of their shell and enjoy activity or give special attention to those children wanting to develop and hone a sports skill.

Ask your child what they would like to do to stay active and try to accommodate this as much as possible in your plans in order to excite and engage children in physical activity.

  1. 2.       Find Activities With Friends

If spending time with friends and having fun is what summer is all about for your kids, why not enroll them in a kids fitness class? Most kids fitness classes are all about nonstop action packed activities to keep kids entertained and active! Talk to the parents of your child’s friends and see if you can organize for them to spend time together at a class. It’s a great way to encourage bonding along with active play.

Organizing playdates with friends and trips together to the park helps children to spend time with their friends and properly organized, each set of parents can take some time off to run errands as well.

  1. 3.        A Family That’s Active Together…

One of the best ways to encourage your children to be active is to set a good example by enjoying activity yourself! Take a vacation as a family in a location where you are encouraged to be active, such as going swimming or going for hikes. This helps children associate fun times spent with family with healthy activity.

  1. 4.       Make Activity a Celebration

Little kids (and us big kids) don’t want to exercise if it’s boring! Make activity fun by going to dance classes (or a dance party!), playing a friendly soccer or baseball match at family gatherings and making activity a celebration in every way.

While it can be difficult to motivate couch potatoes during summer, with these ideas for awesome afterschool activities you can get your kids excited about staying fit.
